We watch for the cycle the two of you fall into, then slow it down enough to see it clearly: what sets it off, what each of you does next, and what you are each actually asking for underneath the criticism or the silence. Then you practice something different, out loud, with a therapist in the room. Most couples leave the first few sessions with language they can use that same week.
