Pre-Bariatric Psychological Evaluation in Florida
A pre-bariatric psychological evaluation is an assessment of your readiness for weight-loss surgery, required by many surgeons and programs. At Challenges Conquered Counseling it includes a clinical interview, standardized assessment and a written report for your surgical team. Why a surgeon asks for this
Preparing for bariatric surgery is a major life decision, and being emotionally and mentally prepared can matter as much as being physically ready. Many bariatric surgeons and weight-loss programs ask for a psychological evaluation before they schedule an operation, and the requirement can come as a surprise.
This is an evaluation, not ongoing therapy. Its job is to look at your readiness, name anything that could get in the way, and give your treatment team the documentation it needs. It is not a test you are meant to dread.

What is covered in the interview
Your evaluation includes a clinical interview about your mental health history, eating and lifestyle behaviors, expectations for surgery, motivation for change, coping skills, support system, and your understanding of the lifestyle changes required after surgery. Standardized psychological or behavioral assessments may also be used when appropriate.
We keep the process straightforward, respectful and supportive. Nobody is trying to catch you out. The aim is an honest picture of where you are and what would help.
Questions are normal, and honest answers help the most. If part of your history feels hard to bring up, say so. The interview is a conversation about what could help you succeed after surgery, and the report is only as accurate as the picture you give.
What you receive
There are three parts. First, an evaluation, a 60 to 90 minute clinical interview. Second, an assessment, with standardized screening, scoring and interpretation. Third, a written report, which is the written clearance or report your surgeon or program needs.
The report reflects what the evaluation finds. We cannot promise a particular conclusion, and the decision about surgery stays with you and your surgical team.
Before your appointment
If your surgeon or bariatric program has its own forms or evaluation requirements, send them to us before your appointment so the report matches what they ask for. Evaluations may be available virtually throughout Florida or in person at 800 E Cypress Creek Rd, Suite 431 in Fort Lauderdale or 10163 Fortune Pkwy G40 in Jacksonville.

Can I do it by video?
Evaluations may be available virtually throughout Florida, or in person at our Fort Lauderdale or Jacksonville office. Tell us your preference when you call, and bring any forms from your surgeon. If part of your program requires an in-person visit, ask us and your surgeon's office what they accept before you book a time.
What if my surgeon has specific forms?
Send them to us before your appointment. If your surgeon or bariatric program has specific forms or evaluation requirements, we want to know in advance so the report covers what they need. Sending them early helps the written report line up with what your program asks for.
Will the evaluation clear me for surgery?
We cannot promise a result. The evaluation assesses psychological readiness and identifies potential barriers, and the written report reflects what it finds.
