Trauma Therapy in Jacksonville, FL
Trauma is not only what happened to you. It is also what your mind and body kept doing afterward in order to keep you safe. That can look like flinching at a sound, going blank in the middle of an argument, avoiding an entire part of town, months of broken sleep, or a sense of being permanently on guard that you cannot explain to anyone.
The Jacksonville therapists at Challenges Conquered Counseling work with people carrying many kinds of trauma: a car accident, a violent incident, a medical emergency, military or first-responder experiences, childhood neglect, an abusive relationship, or a long stretch of chronic stress that never had a name. You do not need to rank what happened to you against anyone else to deserve help with it.
Trauma therapy here does not begin by reliving your worst day. It begins with stability. Your therapist first helps you build reliable ways to stay grounded when your nervous system floods, because that is what makes the deeper work safe. Only when you are ready do you start processing the memory itself, at a pace you set. Depending on what fits you, that might involve EMDR, cognitive processing work, or a slower narrative approach. Clients often notice the change in ordinary places first: sleeping through the night, driving a road they had been avoiding, staying present in a conversation that used to shut them down.
Most people meet weekly to begin with, and sessions run about an hour. Your therapist will keep checking in with you about pacing. Moving too fast is counterproductive, and you are always allowed to say so.
